The best-value way into the Vatican Museums is the official online ticket for €25: the €20 entry plus a €5 booking supplement that lets you skip the ticket office queue. Buying at the door costs €20, but without a booking the wait can take hours, according to secondary sources. Reseller fast-track tickets start at €52.

Prices were checked on 18–19 October 2026. Below are the official prices, the opening days that trip people up, and the St Peter’s dome climb, which is a separate ticket.

Use only the official ticket site

The only official online seller is tickets.museivaticani.va. The museum warns about look-alike domains that sell tickets at inflated prices. Check the address before you pay.

Opening days and hours

The Vatican Museums open Monday to Saturday, 08:00–20:00, with last entry at 18:00.

They are closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free and the museums get very crowded. They also close on 1 January, 1 May, 15 August and 25–26 December, plus other dates listed in the official 2026–27 calendar PDF. Check the calendar before you fix your Vatican day.

How far ahead you can book is not stated on the official site. Third-party sources claim 60 days or three to six months, and they contradict each other, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.

Dress code

The museums don’t allow sleeveless tops, low necklines, shorts above the knee, miniskirts or hats. There is a free cloakroom. St Peter’s Basilica has a similar rule: shoulders and knees must be covered.

Reseller prices: Tiqets

Resellers sell fast-track entry and guided tours. These are the prices we could verify:

    • Guided

Prices checked on 18 October 2026. They change often; check the final price before you pay.

The Tiqets fast-track ticket costs €52, which is €27 more than the official online ticket. It doesn’t add a guide. The Tiqets guided tour costs €83.60 and takes about three hours. GetYourGuide and Viator also sell Vatican tickets and tours, but their pages blocked our check and showed only US dollar prices, so we don’t quote them.

Which ticket should you buy?

  • Most visitors: the official online ticket at €25. You save time in the queue for €5.
  • Tight budget, flexible time: the €20 ticket at the door, if you can accept a long wait.
  • Free entry: the last Sunday of the month, but only if you can handle big crowds and a short 09:00–14:00 window.
  • You want context: a guided tour. The museums are huge, and a guide helps you choose what to see on the way to the Sistine Chapel.
  • Official slots gone: a reseller fast-track ticket or tour.

Pros

  • Official online ticket costs only €5 more than the door price and skips the queue
  • Free entry on the last Sunday of the month and for children under 7
  • Open until 20:00 from Monday to Saturday

Cons

  • Closed on most Sundays and several holidays
  • Look-alike websites sell tickets at inflated prices
  • Reseller fast-track tickets cost about twice the official price

St Peter’s Basilica and the dome climb

St Peter’s Basilica is free to enter. The official site also lists an optional paid time-slot reservation, but it doesn’t state the amount. The climb to the dome is a separate ticket:

  • Dome with stairs (€17): 551 steps. It includes reserved entry to the Basilica, one hour before or after your dome slot, and a digital audio guide.
  • Dome with lift (€22): the lift takes you to the terrace, then you climb 320 steps on foot.

The official booking site shows the prices as “> €17” and “> €22”, so they may vary by date or slot. Tickets are nominative, non-refundable and can’t be changed. On-site sales run only while slots remain.

The dome opens 07:00–18:00 in the summer season, until 25 October 2026. The winter hours published for last season were 07:30–17:00. The climb takes about an hour, and the stairs ticket with the Basilica takes about 2.5 hours. Large bags are not allowed, and there is no cloakroom.

The Tiqets dome ticket with an audio guide costs €34, double the official stairs price.

Planning a Vatican day

The museums and the dome are two separate bookings, so plan the times together:

  • Museums first. The museums open at 08:00. A guided tour takes about three hours, according to Tiqets, so an early slot leaves the afternoon free.
  • Then the dome. The stairs ticket with the Basilica takes about 2.5 hours. With the dome closing at 18:00 until 25 October 2026, and at 17:00 under last season’s published winter hours, book a dome slot that leaves you enough time before closing.
  • Same dress for both. Shoulders and knees covered, no hats in the museums. The museums have a free cloakroom. The dome doesn’t allow large bags and has no cloakroom, so travel light.

Is the Roma Pass useful here?

No. The Roma Pass doesn’t include the Vatican Museums or St Peter’s. Use its free entries for the Colosseum and other sites instead.

Tips for your visit

  • Book the 08:00 slot. The museums are quieter early, and you can walk on to St Peter’s afterwards.
  • Plan your Vatican day for Monday to Saturday. Our Rome in 3 days itinerary puts it on day two.
  • Climb the dome after the museums, but check the dome’s closing time for your date.
  • Book the Colosseum separately. Its tickets go on sale only 30 days ahead.

All our Rome guides are on the Rome destination page.
