A day trip to Sintra from Lisbon costs from €49 with a small-group tour on Viator, or you can go alone and pay only for the monuments. The official Pena Park ticket costs €12, and palace visits start at €20. Be careful with very cheap tours: the lowest prices usually leave out the entry tickets.

The tours fall into three groups:
- Budget tour from €26 (GetYourGuide, down from €32): Sintra, Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira in about 8 hours. At this price, entry tickets are very likely not included, so add them to the cost.
- Small-group tours from €49–69: Viator’s Sintra and Cascais day trip from €49, and GetYourGuide’s small-group tour of Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais from €69 (down from €89). They add the coast and smaller groups.
- Entry ticket only: Tiqets sells the Pena Park ticket at the official price of €12.
Tour or going alone?
Going alone is simple: trains run from Lisbon to Sintra, and buses go up to the palaces. You choose your monuments and your pace. A tour makes sense if you want the coast too, Cabo da Roca and Cascais, which are hard to combine by public transport in one day.
Pros
- Small-group tours combine Sintra with the coast in one day
- Official park ticket costs only €12
- Easy to reach alone by train from Lisbon
Cons
- Cheap tours usually exclude entry tickets
- Palace tickets need a date and time slot
- Crowded in summer, especially around Pena
Which option is best?
- Independent traveller: train to Sintra and the official tickets for the monuments you want.
- Sintra plus the coast in one day: a small-group tour from €49–69.
- Lowest tour price: fine if you budget for tickets separately.
Other Sintra monuments
Pena is the star, but Sintra has several other monuments run by Parques de Sintra, each with its own ticket:
- Moorish Castle: €12 for adults, with walls on the ridge next to Pena and wide views.
- National Palace of Sintra: in the town centre. The Essential visit costs €13 and the Full visit €35.
- Quinta da Regaleira: a private estate with its famous initiation well. It is included in many day tours.
A realistic plan for one day is Pena Palace and Park in the morning, the Moorish Castle next door, and Quinta da Regaleira or the town centre in the afternoon. Buses connect the town with the hilltop monuments.
How to get to Sintra on your own
- Take the train from Lisbon to Sintra. The trip takes under an hour.
- From Sintra station, take a bus up to the palaces or walk up through the old town if you are fit. The climb to Pena is long and steep.
- Book your Pena Palace time slot online first, then plan the other monuments around it.
- Start early. Pena Park opens at 9:00, and the palace queues and roads get busiest from late morning.
Comfortable shoes are essential: the monuments sit on a wooded hill with steep paths and stairs.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to visit Pena Palace?
On the official Parques de Sintra ticket site, a visit to Pena Park costs €12 for adults. Palace visits are sold as the Essential Visit at €20, the Complete Visit at €45 and a 90-minute guided visit at €75.
Do Sintra day tours include entry tickets?
Often not. Very cheap tours, such as the GetYourGuide tour from €26 on our check date, very likely don't include palace entry tickets. Read the inclusions and budget for tickets separately if they are not listed.
Do I need to book Pena Palace tickets in advance?
Palace tickets are sold for a specific date and time slot, and online purchase requires choosing a date. Booking ahead gives you the time you want, especially in summer.
Is Sintra included in the Lisboa Card?
According to secondary sources, the Lisboa Card does not include the Parques de Sintra monuments such as Pena Palace. Check the current Lisboa Card benefits before relying on it for Sintra.
