The cheapest way into the Rijksmuseum is the official adult ticket for €25, booked online on rijksmuseum.nl with a fixed start time. Under-18s go in free, and so do holders of the I amsterdam City Card and the Museumkaart, but everyone needs a time slot. The Tiqets entry ticket costs €27, so a reseller only makes sense if you want a guided tour.

Below are the official ticket types, what resellers charge, and how to choose. Prices were checked on 18–19 October 2026.

Book a start time, even if you go in free

Every visitor books a start time online, including children and Museumkaart holders. Paid tickets are non-refundable, so pick your slot with care.

The adult ticket is the one most visitors need. A few details from the official site:

  • Under 18: free. The FAQ says “under 18”, while the opening hours page says “aged 18 and under”. If you are exactly 18, check the booking page for your case.
  • CJP and EYCA cards: 50% off. The FAQ gives this as €12.50, but the opening hours page shows €11.25. The official site contradicts itself here, so expect one of the two at checkout.
  • Free with a card: the I amsterdam City Card, Museumkaart, ICOM, Stadspas, Vereniging Rembrandt and VriendenLoterij VIP. You still book a time slot.

Can you buy tickets at the entrance?

The official FAQ says tickets are sold online only. The opening hours page is a little softer: it says a limited number may be sold at the entrance while stocks last. In practice, book online before you go, especially if you want a morning slot.

The Tiqets entry ticket costs €27, which is €2 more than the official ticket for the same visit. The guided tour from €59 lasts about two hours and adds a guide, which helps in a museum this size.

According to the Rijksmuseum FAQ, its official sales partners include GetYourGuide, Musement, Tours & Tickets, Blue Boat, the I amsterdam City Card, GoCity, ANWB and Stadspas. Tiqets and Viator are not on that list. We could not verify GetYourGuide and Viator prices in euros on our check date, so we don’t show them.

Which ticket should you buy?

  • Most visitors: the official adult ticket at €25. Book the time you want and arrive a few minutes early.
  • Children and teenagers: free, but add them to the booking so they have a slot.
  • You want a guide: a guided tour on Tiqets from €59 for about two hours.
  • You’ll visit several museums in one day: compare the I amsterdam City Card. The 24-hour card costs €67 and includes the Rijksmuseum, public transport and one canal cruise.

Pros

  • Official ticket is the cheapest option
  • Under-18s go in free
  • Open every day, including public holidays
  • Free with the I amsterdam City Card and Museumkaart

Cons

  • Every visitor must book a start time
  • Paid tickets are non-refundable
  • Door sales are limited or not available

Is the I amsterdam City Card worth it for the Rijksmuseum?

Not for the Rijksmuseum alone. The 24-hour card costs €67, and the Rijksmuseum ticket is €25. The official I amsterdam sales portal says the card also includes free entry to over 70 museums and attractions, unlimited GVB trams, buses, metro and ferries, one canal cruise and 24-hour bike rental.

Two things to know before you buy it:

  • The card does not include the Anne Frank House, which gives no discount for it.
  • Third-party sources say it does not include the Van Gogh Museum either. We could not confirm this on the official site.

So a card day with the Rijksmuseum (€25) and a canal cruise (from €14.50) covers €39.50 of tickets. It pays off only if you add more museums or use a lot of transport on the same day. Our Amsterdam in 3 days itinerary does the full maths.

Opening hours and timing

The Rijksmuseum opens daily from 9:00 to 17:00, including public holidays. The shop and café are open until 18:00. The museum says you can see the highlights in about an hour. Plan more time if you want to see more than the highlights.

Tips for your visit

  • Take the 9:00 slot if you want to start your day early. The museum opens at the same time every day of the week.
  • If you have a City Card or Museumkaart, book your free time slot as soon as you know your date.
  • Combine the visit with the Van Gogh Museum in the same Museum Quarter. Both use timed tickets, so leave at least two hours between slots.
  • Stromma runs a canal cruise from a Rijksmuseum departure point. The adult ticket was €17.50 for about 1 hour 15 minutes on our check date.

Other Amsterdam tickets

The Anne Frank House works differently from the Rijksmuseum: tickets are sold only on the museum’s own website and are released six weeks ahead. Read our Anne Frank House ticket guide before you plan that day.
